Aside for some rolling, uncooperative tarpon in the morning, The Bay was a vast desert wasteland last Sunday. We poled a good number of flats and down island on the ocean side, and left without seeing much more than a few sharks, rays, and a lone hooked boxfish.

It’s kind of depressing when you start to throw your fly at everything that swims, but at least the boxer ate, I guess!!! Off the water until next Friday when we will be in the lower keys, and hopefully (weather permitting) beyond…

Digging Bones…

Did some afternoon hunting for bonefish on ‘The Bay’ last Sunday. Met up with Saddler after his morning charter and jumped on board to go see whats swimming around some ocean flats and edges. We had a pair cruise down an edge right away, but they weren’t aggressively feeding, and don’t think they saw my fly. They also passed on a live shrimp that Everett laid in front of them. It went quiet for awhile, and the clouds built up and some light rain blew threw. We did get a little sun back, enough to spot a group of tailing fish on an adjacent flat. They stayed happy long enough to get Dave in range, and he got the fly in front of them. A nice fish kicked its tail and ran the fly down and ate. Dave came tight, and then the fish popped off somehow. Not sure where the line hung up on, but when the bonefish turned to run, it broke off quick. That was it for the day, except for some cuban grub on Key Biscayne…

Tampa Tourney…

Steve and I met up in Ruskin last week and fished the ‘Salty Fly’ in Tampa Bay. The weather was tough, with morning winds gusting at 30 in the morning when I checked the buoys. We launched the boat at a small city park on the St. Pete side of the Skyway. When we got there, the ramp was crap and all spots for trailers were taken by runners. It was pretty clear that locals wrote this place off. As I dropped it in, the left side of the ramp fell off and the boat looked as if it was going to roll over onto its side. But it didn’t, and we got the boat floating. Checked out a bunch of spots: Docks, channels, grassflats close by and saw nothing. Super windy and cold water. It wasn’t until late in the afternoon that we saw some fish. But the reds we were after never moved until they were spooked, and never got a legitimate shot at a fish to weigh. At the raffle we did about as well, both of us getting t shirts and a sticker or something. But again it was a great time, met some new cool people and have a good idea what we need to do next year to fill our score card. The camera never even came out of the bag. Looking forward to the Keys trip coming up in about a month, Sugarloaf Key…

Spearing & Kayaking

Something off the beaten path from flats fishing is my buddy Matty out on the local reefs freediving solo and spearing up some good eats. He’s getting some Hog Snapper, lobster and if you look at one if the pics closely you’ll see a Lionfish. Matty is out helping clear the reefs of those invasive POS’s. Nice job on that Cero from the kayak.
