Sailfish Snook/Man Overboard
Had a 3 boat charter with Capt. Dave, Capt. Quinton and myself. We took out a regular client of Dave’s and his family. The family was reuniting after 20 years of seperation and it was pretty neat to be a part of their reunion and their enthusiasm was great. We started off at Sandsprit where Dave and Quinton decided to head out to Pecks Lake for the incredible Mackerel schools that gather there every year and had their clients on a 40 per boat Mack attack and Dave’s boat was also the lucky recipient of a Toro snapper, Mmmm Mmmm, love that sweet bouquet!! I decided to head over to the Pompano grounds to get these guys something to cook up the next day. We got to the flats and the tide was a negative one and almost all the grass was exposed so we crept slowly through one of the finger channels where the fish would be schooled up and had Pomps skipping right away. We couldn’t get any to eat and while casting a Pompano jig to a skipper, Hoarst had a nice 34″ Snook crush his jig and he managed to land it after a nice 5 minute battle that left me out of breath and I didn’t even fight it. We got into some jacks and sheepshead and had plenty of Pompano skipping and although we probably hooked a few and lost them, it just wasn’t happening for us. With the sun going down fast, we headed back over across the inlet in pitch black to the lighted docks where the other boats eagerly awaited Hoarst to compliment him on his nice Snook and we proceeded to just work the docks hard. Oh yeah by the way did I mention Hoarst, who is from Long Island thought this February weather in Florida was way too hot for him and he decided to cool off by jumping in the water on the flats. After telling him to watch out for Greg “Da Bull” Noll, he walked on water and jumped right back in. It didn’t go exactly like that but let’s just pretend it did. Anyways, Hoarst had the hot hand and landed another nice Fat Snook at the docks that went around 5-6 lbs. Mike was hitting it pretty hard and although he had some nice hits, the fish gods just weren’t with him that night and I know he’d love to have back some of those hits for sure. It was a good night with a lot of memories for those guys to share and I know Hoarst will remember that Snook until he gets one a little bigger.
