Under the ‘Supermoon’

During this months full moon, dubbed the ‘Supermoon’ because of its proximity to Earth, we had to get out and pole some flats at night.  We chose the Stuart area, because the winds were forecast to be the lightest out of most areas.  Murph, Everett and I hit McCrays BBQ for dinner on the way up just off 45th Street in Mangonia Park.  The tide cranked, and the sky was perfectly clear for this moon event.  While we didn’t see any tails, the topwater bite was on fire.  The bluefish were acting like baby tarpon,  jumping like crazy and hammering topwater lures.  There were a few snook around and we hooked one big one.  The fish ran drag a few times and somehow severed the braided line above the leader.  Maybe a blue tried to go after the lure in the snooks mouth and bit the line, who knows.  There was very little traffic on the water, only a few boats doing drifts for pompano.  Next time going to prepare a bit better and bring some live bait as well.  But it was a great night with lots of action with the ‘lesser’ species!
